David McGuire runs the excellent Non Profit Sea Stewards, who are devoted to the preservation of sharks and marine life. He sent me an email last week asking for some help creating some promotional material for an upcoming press event. The news of the press event is out, so I can tell you that it's for a bill that would ban the sale of shark fin in California. Shark fin is used in an Asian soup by the same name, and is considered a delicacy. While it was once an item consumed only by the most wealthy a growing middle class has increased demand for the soup on an unprecedented scale.

Because of the high value of shark fin, fisherman will cut the fins off and through the rest of the shark back. How common this fishing practice is, is in debate. But what's clear is that shark populations are in collapse and if we don't do something about it, many species may disappear all together. If you are interested in helping conserve sharks, spread the word, visit Sea Stewards, and California Assembly Members Paul Fong and Jared Huffman.
